Drug Store deals for the week of 10/31- 11/6

Sorry for another week of half-effort on the drug store front, but we are in the process if sprucing up our kitchen.  My junk drawer and silverware drawer threw up all over my kitchen table, so until that gets cleared off (if ever), this is all the effort that I am able to put in this week.  Plus, I want to save a little time for the all-important SUPER DOUBLES list for Harris Teeter.

A couple of pointers:
  • As you cruise through the sales paper and see something that interests you, wondering if you have a coupon for "that", go to afullcup.com or couponmom.com.  They have a great coupon query feature.  Our area may not have gotten the particular coupon, so keep that in mind while you are looking.
  • Visit one of the blogs on the right on my main blog page. They have some great lists for this week.

Meow Mix at Food Lion....and Eggs

We have been out of eggs for two days at our house and no one has them on sale. As a result, we have ZERO eggs in our house.  We aren't the kind of family that eats eggs on a daily basis, but, just like sugar, flour and milk, I feel like something is off if I am out of them.  Who knows when I need to make an "emergency" cake!?!?!  So, the question is how do I get free/cheap eggs?

My friend Anita was telling me about a deal at Food Lion on the Meow Mix. The Selects are on sale for .50 and we have a coupon for $1.00/2 (9/26 Red Plum).  Good - but I don't have a cat and still have to pay tax on these.  Granted, I SHOULD buy these and either give them to my MIL who actually HAS a cat or donate them to the animal shelter.....

But, it gets better (to us avid couponers, free is not enough anymore, especially on items that we don't use)....Antia also told me about the catalina deal associated with this.  When you purchase 6, you get a $1 catalina off your next order.........I see free eggs in my future! I stopped in and purchased 12 and received 2 x $1 OYNO catalina.  Normally, when you purchase more than required amount, you don't get "extra" catalinas, but I read on afullcup.com that it was purchasing multiples.

Also, while you are there, don't forget to look for the Ronzoni blinkie machine.
Ronzoni is BOGO again this week (usually around .68 for one)

BOLO for the $1/2 blinkie - the machine is in front of the Ronzoni pasta
= around .18 for one

The Ronzoni Garden Variety is still on sale for $1, BOLO for the blinkie maching giving you $1.00 off the Garden Variety - and/or clip the $1.00 coupon from the 10/3 Smart Source.

End of Season Basil = Pesto

This year, as well as years past, I had a lot of basil in my garden.  Every year, I have good intentions to actually do something with it at the end of the season, but sadly, due to time constraints, it simply dies on the vine.  What a waste......

But not this year!!!  My Mom and sister gave me inspiration to make pesto. The pesto factory was hard at work at my sister's house with her abundance of basil.  As sisters do, she shared her pesto with me and Mom gave me the recipe.  (You know how the story goes.....this is really good - can I have the recipe?)

Act I
Off to the garden at about 8:30 a.m......I had five large basil plants/bushes to tackle and it was a cool Saturday morning.  Perfect for "harvesting" basil. I started off by cutting down three of the plants and carefully laying them so that the leaves would not get crushed.  I unearthed the largest stainless steel bowl (my grandparents used these ALL of the time in the kitchen) and plucked every basil leaf off the plants.  This was very time consuming.  At this point, I was REALLY glad that I had not cut down all five plants. I ended up with three large bowls full.

I then washed the basil leaves and laid them out on the counter, covered them with papertowels and placed plates on them to help weigh the papertowels down on top of the leaves for quicker drying.   I left them for a while.....I was quickly tiring of basil.

I returned later, chopped up the basil, added EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) and placed the mixture in three large mason jars.  According to the recipe that my Mom and sister gave me, this was enough for nine recipes.  I did not have the remaining ingredients to finish making the pesto so I put the jars in the fridge until I was able to go to Aldi. At this point, frankly, I was done with basil.

Lucky for me Aldi was closed and I knew the grocery store would be too pricey for the nuts, EVOO and cheese that I needed.

Act II
But all good things must come to an end.  A few days passed (almost a week to be honest with you) and I knew it was time to get cracking at the pesto. I was able to make it to Aldi and get the ingredients that I needed. This pesto making sure is expensive!!!

I had not eaten dinner and everyone else in the house was doing their own thing, so I cooked up some pasta and added my sister's pesto. I thought it was appropriate since I was actually making my own. I always think that someone else's taste better. It sure was good!!!

I followed the recipe exactly on the first batch of pesto, but quickly ran out of ingredients.  Just another excuse to drag this project out another day.

Act III
I made my grocery store run after work and picked up MORE of the ingredients, but this time I did not follow the recipe as closely.  I had WAYYY to much basil left and not nearly enough nuts and cheese.  I adapted and finally, the end was in sight.  As I was bottling the last batch up, my husband comes into the kitchen with a grin and says "aren't you glad that I pulled the rest of the basil out of the ground for you today?"  I thought I was going to loose it. He started laughing and rolled his eyes......good - he was just kidding.

I used the Starbucks Frappuccino bottles that I had saved and they held alot of pesto.  I ended up with four jars, as well as one jelly jar and one ice cube tray which is going into the freezer and then placed in ziploc bags....and I STILL had basil left.

On a side note, I could not find the icecube trays at the dollar store.  I went out to lunch with my work/coupon/good friend and she opened the back of her car.  What did she have but bags of icecube trays - I almost flipped out - "Where did you get those....what are you going to do with those, etc." I think I may have scared her a little.  Someone actually excited over icecube trays?  Really? She gave me one (of course offered to give me more, but I only needed one) and I was trilled!!!

Over a week later and I FINALLY have pesto....and enough to share.  Life is good and my house reeks of garlic.  No vampires for us on Halloween!!!

My Deals at Kohl's

Kohl's is one of those places that you can get some great deals, but if you're like me, you have to be very careful.  Sure its 50% off, but off of what?  I have a love/hate relationship with Kohl's.....why is the non-sale stuff MUCH more appealing than the sale stuff?  Do I really "need" it?

Most of you that know me well know that I am usually on the top of my game with the deals/coupons.  But every once in a while, I miss one and boy did I miss this one big.

My friend Tasha called me to tell me about a coupon that was in the paper last week for $10 off ANY Kohl's purchase.....even off of clearance!!! I don't get the paper (except on Sundays).  I should've gone out right then and purchased all that I could get my hands on, but I didn't.  Anyway.....Tasha was generous enough to give me two of her coupons (she was the smart one and acquired muliple papers!!)

I went today at lunch and purchased a towel and washcloth x 2 in two transactions.  My total for each transaction was $2.13 for a grand total of $4.26. My total savings was $44. The is going to come in handy for our guests this weekend and it match's Rachel's bathroom perfectly!! Plus - you can never have too many towels!!!

Tasha is probably laughing at the post right now - "Savings of $44!?!?!" Add another zero and that's probably where her savings are at.

Did you get in on this deal?  If so, I would love to hear about your finds - please leave a post.

More frequent - EXCITING posts

So....who is getting bored with only the coupon matchups on this blog?  I certainly am.  That is the primary reason for this blog and I have fulfilled and will continue to fulfill that need, but boy is it boring!!!

Also, my original goal was to only post the deals that I thought the general couponer could accomplish. When I first started couponing, I was soooo frustrated to read about other people's deals and realize that the "window of opportunity" had passed, making it impossible for me to do the deal.  But - looking back - I enjoyed reading about them and it gave me a higher standard to aim for. Don't worry - your inbox will not be flooded with posts - maybe just a couple of extra posts per week - my life is not THAT exciting!!

I hope that you will find the upcoming additional posts entertaining/useful and inspiring. Stay tuned.....

Big Lots Coupon - 20% off

Oh how I love Big Lots.  I do not shop there much any more because they do not accept manufacturer's coupons....but....when I need something (really need it - not just get it because it's free) Big Lots is usually one of my first stops.

In the couponing world, there are particular items that we use daily that is difficult to get for free.  Sad, but true.....

One of these items is cooking spray.  Big Lots has cooking spray for $1.20. They also currently have a printable coupon for 20% off from October 6-9.  That makes the cooking spray only $1.00. With the holidays fastly approaching, this will really come in handy.

Also, I am confident that some Halloween candy just may jump into my basket as well, which is fine because the coupon is 20% off your entire purchase.

They have also jumped on the "Rewards Card" bandwagon and have a program called Buzz Club Rewards. You can sign up online or in the store.  There are a few benefits, including seeing the sales ad early, viewing the clearance items early , etc.
Here is the link.  It is a pdf, so you can print as many as you like.

Enjoy and have fun at Big Lots!!!!

Hanesbrands United Way Sale Saturday, 10/02/10

ALL PROCEEDS BENEFIT THE UNITED WAY

The Hanesbrands United Way product sale will be held on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Weeks Plant parking lot (on Hanes Mill Road, next to the Fulton Y). No sales prior to 8 a.m. Cash and credit/debit cards only. No checks.

I went to the employee sale today (Friday). They had a lot of Just My Size items, as well as bras and panties and Men's socks.  They had some Champion workout wear, but I did not see any hoodies.  They did have some sweatshirts.  Womens socks were minimal, but they had plenty of "boot" socks - which were really nice.
